Musk, Trump Cannibalize Each Other on Social Media

The political love affair between President Trump and Elon Musk has ended.

On Thursday, the two went head-to-head on social media and traded jabs and allegations against each other.

The dustup appears to be born out of Musk’s criticism of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” that slashes key service such as Medicaid and SNAP. Both of these programs are crucial to the survival of many Americans.

What began as a simple war of words morphed into pure mudslinging with Musk blasting Trump for “ingratitude” over the 2024 election and even advocated for Trump’s impeachment. Musk spent about $270M helping Republicans win the 2024 election cycle.

On Trump’s social media platform, he claimed Musk was upset about him taking away his EV mandate.

“Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” Trump wrote.

He then said that an easy way to save money would be to end the government contracts that Musk had entered into.

But, as the day progressed, the attacks became more personal with Musk posting that Trump was on Jeffrey Epstein’s list.

“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

Speaking to reporters at the White House earlier on Thursday, Trump pushed back on Musk in extensive remarks.

“Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” Trump said.

Trump’s spending bill narrowly passed the House last month. It’s now in the Senate and there is a small group of Republicans who are causing the bill to face headwinds. According to Musk, the bill would add $3B to the national deficit and undermine the work of DOGE, the governmental department that Musk formerly led.

Trump asserted that Musk knew what was in the bill and had no problem with its contents. Musk adamantly denied that claim.

“False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!” Musk wrote.

The insults continued until late on Thursday.

Neither the White House nor representatives for Musk have issued an official statement.
