Shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia Leaves Five Soldiers Injured

Five soldiers were injured during a shooting on Wednesday at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

The shooting took place at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team at around 10:56 a.m. The suspect, a male soldier, was apprehended nearly 40 minutes later. The base reported that there was no active threat to the community.

The status of the injured soldiers’ have not been updated, but two of the victims were taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, a Level 1 trauma center about 40 miles away from Fort Stewart.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said on social media, “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”
Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield is expected to make official remarks to the press at 3:30 EST regarding the shooting and other questions that have arisen.
In the meantime, other Georgia politicians have issued statements sending their thoughts to victims and lauding first responders.
“Praying for the wounded soldiers and their families following today’s horrific shooting at Fort Stewart,” said former state lawmaker and gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. “Grateful to the first responders who rushed to the scene and saved lives.”
This is not the first shooting at Fort Stewart. In 2022, Sgt. Nathan M. Hillman, an Afghan veteran, was shot and killed on base by Spc. Shay A. Wilson. The suspect used his personal weapon to shoot Hillman and was subdued by other soldiers until the police arrived on the scene. Wilson has been charged with murder and his case is pending.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
