Democrats in three major races all won on Tuesday with several candidates making history.

The elections for Virginia governor, New Jersey governor and New York City mayor, produced stunning and historic results.

In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger defeated the current Lieutenant Governor Winsom Earle-Sears in the race for governor. This win will make Spanberger the first female governor of Virginia.

Ghazala Hashmi was elected lieutenant governor. She will be the first Indian and Muslim lieutenant governor of the state.  Additionally, Jay Jones was chosen as the state’s first Black attorney general. All three are Democrats.

In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill beat out Republican Jack Ciattarelli. This was a major win for state Democrats in their first election cycle since Donald Trump took office in January.

One of the most watched races, the New York City mayor’s election ended with Zohran Mamdani defeating former governor Mario Cuomo.

Mamdani, who calls himself a Democratic Socialist, will be the y0oungest and first Muslim mayor that New York City has had. He quickly made his way from an obscure underdog to winning the primary in June. Cuomo switched to an Independent and vowed to stay in the race. Yet, despite endorsements from Trump and Elon Musk, he could not overcome the strengthening social consciousness of key New York voting blocks.
