House Votes Down Trump’s Tariffs Against Canada

The House on Wednesday passed a Dem-backed resolution disapproving of Trump’s tariffs against Canada.

The resolution passed the House 219-211, with many Republicans crossing the aisle. One Democrat, Jared Golden of Maine, voted against the resolution.

The measure was first introduced by Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-NY, and was taken up the day after a vote on a rule that would bar House challenges to Trump’s tariffs failed.

In what seems to have become a linchpin of the Trump administration, Trump took to social media to warn Republicans that he intended to mete out consequences to those who voted against his tariffs.

“Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election [sic] time, and that includes Primaries [sic],” Trump posted on Truth Social during the vote. “TARISS have given us Economic [sic] and National Security [sic], and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.”

However, enough Republicans were unconcerned by the threat and chose to vote in the interest of their constituents.

“I voted on principle,” said Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska.

Bacon said that the White House tried to flip his vote, but wasn’t successful.

“They were trying to do sweeteners for Nebraska, but I said what about the other 49 states?” he said.

On Tuesday, Rep. Meeks also took to X and spoke about Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La, by failing to uphold Congress’s authority.

“The Speaker continues to abdicate his responsibilities, ceding Congress’s Article I authority to Donald Trump. Republicans now face a clear choice: go on the record and join Democrats in ending these cost-raising tariffs, or keep forcing American families to pay for them,” he wrote the day before the vote.

The resolution now heads to the Senate where, based on similar resolutions last year, is expected to pass.

“This price-spiking tariff tax is raising costs on everything from groceries [sic] prices to energy bills, all because Trump chose chaos over common sense. It’s time to deliver relief,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
