The number of visa revocations that took place in 2025 is a record and is more than double the number of revocations under the Biden administration in 2024.
Trump won his bid for a second term with mass deportation as one of the main components of his platform. Initially, the targets were to be those in the United States illegally, but those who have legal status have found themselves targeted by Trump’s DHS.
While DHS enforces immigration laws, the State Department is the agency that handles the visa program. Under Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, revocations increased to the point where there are more immigrants without legal status.
According to the State Department comments to Fox News, most of the revocations were of tracelers who overstayed their tourist or business visa. Others had their visas revoked for alleged criminal involvement.
They also reported that nearly 500 people lost their student visa due to drug possession and distribution.
Last year, Rubio said that the department would revoke student visas for students who were allegedly linked to “pro-Hamas” behavior on campuses nationwide. This generally translated into targeting students who participated in anti-genocide demonstrations related to Palenstine.
They’ve also revoked visas from those who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s death.
The administration has said they are in an ongoing vetting process of all 55 million people who have a U.S. visa.
“The Trump administration will continue to put America first and protect our nation from foreign nationals who pose a risk to public safety or national security,” said Piggott.
Trump has set a goal of 10 million deportations for the life of his presidency.
