A partial government shutdown began on Saturday after the Sente failed to pass the funding package in time for the House to vote by the Friday deadline.
Lawmakers are hopeful that this shutdown won’t last as long as the previous one, the longest in history. The House plans to try to pass the funding bill quickly on Monday when members return. Congress had previously passed half of the funding bill so that a stalemate wouldn’t negatively affect agencies, such as nutrition assistance programs.
For the Pentagon and agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Department of Transportation, funding will end and workers could face working without pay or being furloughed if the matter isn’t settled in a timely manner.

Lawmakers from both parties were making strides until the killing of Alex Pretti when Democrats decided that the funding bill for DHS should be taken out of the funding package that the House passed. They are demanding that changes to immigration enforcement, including a code of conduct and identification requirement for agents.
The Trump administration made a deal with Democrats to only fund DHS at current levels for two weeks in the midst of negotiations to avoid another government shutdown.
