The House has approved a resolution to block Trump from carrying on the war in Iran. Four Republicans voted with the Democrats, signaling a loosening of the MAGA snare within Congress.
In a 215-208 vote, the war powers resolution directing Trump to withdraw troops from Iran unless Congress declares or authorizes war, is the most recent loss for Trump despite his party holding majorities in both chambers.
Although the resolution passed this round, it still needs to make its way through the Senate to become effective and there is currently a debate over whether a war powers resolution is constitutional even if approved by Congress.
However, the results of the House vote tells a story of how even some Republicans have concerns over Trump’s handling of the war in Iran. Three previous resolutions intended to tamp down on the administration’s desire to do what it pleases failed and GOP leadership postponed a vote on the matter last month.
Wednesday’s vote indicates that the tide may be turning.
On Thursday, Trump did what he does best and visited social media to question the patriotism of the vote that came “right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Not one to leave personal insults on the table, Trump also said that Republicans who voted with Democrats should be ashamed of themselves.
Last month, the Senate advanced its own similar resolution after seven previous failures. There have been no further votes scheduled on the matter.
The Republicans who voted with the Democrats were Rep. Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and noted Trump nemesis Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
Seven members of the House did not vote and none of the Democrats voted against the resolution.
“The passage of this WPR today signals a significant turning point: more and more Republicans are listening to their constituents who do not want another open-ended war in the Middle East,” said the resolution’s sponsor Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York.
