Walgreens Recalls Nasal Spray Over Bacterial Contamination

Walgreens

Walgreens is recalling more than 41,000 bottles of its saline nasal spray after federal regulators warned the product may be contaminated with a bacterium linked to spoilage and potential infections.

The Food and Drug Administration said the recall covers 41,328 bottles of Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray with Xylitol in 1.5-ounce (45 mL) containers. Testing indicated the product may contain pseudomonas lactis, a bacterium commonly associated with dairy spoilage. Officials did not say what caused the contamination.

Two lots are affected:

  • Lot 61409, expiration Feb. 28, 2027

  • Lot 71861, expiration Aug. 31, 2027

The agency classified the recall as a Class II, meaning use of the product could lead to temporary or medically reversible health issues.

While the bacteria are known to spoil milk, the FDA said contamination in a nasal spray carries more serious risks, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections.

Consumers who purchased the affected spray are advised to stop using it immediately and follow recall instructions from Walgreens or the product distributor.
